Follow one line from its two edges

Consider an illustrative line showing BAR, BAR, wild, yellow gem and blue gem from left to right. The held wild can complete the left-starting BAR combination. The blue and yellow symbols at the other end do not form a matching right-starting combination merely because the middle reel is wild.
